This is a book for anyone who enjoyed / devoured A Little Life (not sure I know anyone who didn’t read it and if not, why not?). Told from Betty’s point of view as the adored daughter of a Cherokee man and a white woman, set in Ohio at the beginning of the 19th Century, Betty charts the fictionalised life of the authors mother, as the only sibling out of several who looks like her Cherokee father. The relationship between father and daughter is truly beautiful, but even that can’t stop the endemic racism and abuse that shapes Betty’s life. I haven’t read anything else by Tiffany Mc Daniel before but based on this, I will.
